Rise & Shine

The teachers were snuggled in their beds with the dulcet sounds of a dozens of students fresh from a night's sleep, playing gaga ball outside out cabin. None of us were moving quickly. Our stats after a half day at camp looked like this:

We earned every delicious calorie at breakfast. Campers chowed down on a wide choice of options including pancakes, turkey sausage, oatmeal, yoghurt, cereal, milk, boiled eggs, lots of fruit, and more.

Reports were generally positive from both cabin leaders and students on the night time. It's another blue sky day here at Camp Campbell Outdoor Science School.

Lights Out

Teachers do a night patrol while students are getting ready for bed and shutting down. Adult bedtime is after Mrs. Ananmalay and Mrs. Pine are typically asleep (we're early birds), so like our fifth graders, we will enjoy a VERY good night's sleep.

Tomorrow holds swimming, picnic hikes, more outdoor lessons, and visits from Mr. Rousseau and retired 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Borges.

We had a great chuckle eavesdropping outside a boys' cabin. The deadpan delivery is probably what had us giggling.

Student: What does the alarm sound like?

Cabin Leader: Me telling you to wake up.

The loveliest moment of the night was seeing a student remove his jacket and wrap it around a cabinmate/friend who hadn't made the best clothing decision this cold night. Life has natural consequences. If you don't put on warm clothing despite repeated instructions to do so, you'll be cold. Similarly, if you know good people, they'll come to your aid.

We are privileged to witness so many lovely moments as your children navigate being away from you.

Learning at Camp

Field groups scattered along the trails for a variety of lessons. Some of the teachers caught up with a group for a river study. The San Lorenzo River flows through camp, and our young scientists collected macro invertebrates from the water to ascertain the water health.

Once caught, the creatures were compared to a dichotomous key in order to determine exactly what they are. The health of the water can be understood given the absence or presence of certain types of creatures.

LUNCH!

Meals are family-style at Camp. Would you believe us if we told you that 200 students entered the massive Swenson Lodge silently? They stood behind their chairs while everyone entered. Silently. They waited to hear all the instructions. Silently.

Then one designated "Hopper" got up from each table to retrieve a platter of hot dogs and fries. Students with specific dietary needs are invited into the commercial kitchen to get similar food that fits their needs. Today's hot dogs, fries, and salad (the salad bar might be the best part of every meal) filled hungry tummies before we headed off for more learning.

Everyone helps out with cleanup, as you can see from the photos below. We all work together to create a comfortable space for everyone.

Finding our way around camp...

We made it!

 Hello from the forest!

The 5th Grade has arrived jubilantly at Camp Campbell. The air is cool, and the sky is brilliant blue against the tops of the redwood trees.

Students are at the main camp getting oriented, singing songs, and getting ready for a busy week. Teachers have met with the camp staff to review our students needs and their cabin assignments. For the first time in our collective memory, we teachers are housed in one of the beautiful student cabins in the 49er camp.

Lunch is just around the corner. More news later this afternoon from the 5th grade team!

Exciting Times Ahead

LAES Families,

Welcome to our blog. At the moment it is 100% dedicated to events and activities for the entire class of 5th graders at Camp Campbell. We'll write throughout the day and post a few photographs in order to give you a feel for what's happening.

Please feel free to share the URL with family members privately, but please do not share the URL on other social media platforms. It's not locked, but we would like to keep its existence low profile.

We're looking forward to a great adventure!

Scholastic News!

We've got tons of reading available to you on Scholastic News and you can read issues that interest you from way back.  The current article is about Coronovirus. It's informative, but I feel like the photos they choose to publish are a bit scare, so you might want to skip it and read other stuff.

Remember our password is K***P** (after our class animals, only the first letters are capitalized). don't use CLEVER or GOOGLE CLASSROOM.
