Teachers' days are long here. But the pace is a little slower. But the hills are a little steeper. But the breaths are a little deeper. It all adds up to a happy fatigue, the kind sets in after a job well done.
The cabins are quiet. There are the expected first night homesick jitters. Teachers and camp staff work with students to help them find their own tools to deal with those very real feelings. Developing self-reliance is so important, knowing that you can do hard things and that those hard things can feel rewarding and worthwhile in the end. The knot in your tummy will pass and everything will be as it was - just fine.
The only roar in the air is the sound of crickets. The moon is streaming light through every opening in the redwood branches. Time to rest and restore. Tomorrow is an exciting new day.
