Don't get in the way...

...because Mrs. A is all about the blueberry pancakes on Thursday morning.  They were SO good.  Even for those crazy people who don't like pancakes there was breakfast ham, veggie patties, cereal, yoghurt, milk & fruit.  We're spoiled for choice even at breakfast.  Though why anyone would take a pass on blueberry pancakes is beyond my comprehension.

The first part of our morning was spent sorting mail:  we wear many hats at Camp.  With 120 LAES students and almost 200 students altogether, mail delivery at Thursday evening's meal requires a well-organized plan. USPS has nothing on the 5th grade staff.

I headed into the main lodge after that to join the groups preparing for the day's Picnic Hike - the day long affair.  Students make their own lunches to ensure that each has something he/she will eat.  Turkey, ham, or SB&J (sunflower butter and jam) sandwiches were the mainstay for most.  I saw many smiley faces made out of mustard, and lots of students choosing to add fresh lettuce.  They'll share carrying water and other items to their destination. The sky is mottled with clouds and there is a light breeze, harbingers of a terrific adventure.

The next group that I joined was in Sasha's garden (see the photos below).  They sampled and smelled a variety of fruits, veggies and herbs in the garden which includes "Three Sisters" patch that some students will learn about in their study of Native Americans later this fall. Naturalist John Deer taught me and my young companions about worm composting.  The Mistress of the Garden herself, Sasha, worked with students to turn, sift, and move the main compost bins along in their process.

Finally I wandered down to the pool on the leeward side of the camp.  It's a little warmer, and student engaged in free play and swimming for about an hour for their aquatic time.  The pool was built during my tenure here, and it's a lovely facility.

Lunch will be served shortly.  Students will have an afternoon class and then they'll jump into their chosen activity.

  2. Despite all the walking, hiking, and long days, one never seems to drop any excess pounds at Science Camp. You can see why. :)
