Mrs. O'Loughlin & I enjoyed a chat with our counterparts from the German International School on the steps of the Lodge under the starlight. We observed that we could have happily sat out there until the wee hours with a comfortable chair and a warm blanket. The stars are visible in the midnight blue sky that is lit by the waxing moon. That said, we're tired. So please forgive our dusty, fatigued appearance tomorrow. Our days here run from 7 am to 10 pm mostly non-stop.
The turkey or veggie tacos, black beans, fixings and salad all went over well this evening. With all the activity, everyone is hungry come mealtime and tonight was no exception. We sang the traditional "Happy Birdy to You" (no that's not a typo) to Sachin and Michael who celebrated their birthdays while we were up here. The meal was topped off with churros - a crowd favorite.
The closing event was down by the fire at the stage. Field groups did skits, we sang songs, and even the teachers managed to squeeze in a quick "Roll Call" skit - our first ever. Whenever the mention of "last night" was made, the students groaned. They're having fun. That said, I know they will welcome a long bath, an extra cuddle, and their own beds tomorrow night. Whether they loved camp (most do) or not (some don't) every student found something to make them smile and should be proud of this age-appropriate step of independence.
We are incredibly grateful to the staff at Camp Campbell for their excellent work with our students and wide open channels of communication with us. For the five of us (Ananmalay, Borges, McLean, Mlakar, O'Loughlin), our annual returns to Camp are fluid events built on strong professional relationships with our YMCA colleagues. After this many years, it really doesn't feel like we only see them for four days out of every year.
Barring any problems, we'll roll in around 1:45. If you are available, your child will welcome going home a little early. Please remember that you MUST sign out your child as you would for any early departure. Mrs. Dreher usually has clipboard teed up for each class. For students who stay until regular dismissal, we will gather in one classroom for low-key, quiet activities.
Thank you for entrusting your children to us this week. It's been our pleasure to watch them grow, help them problem solve, and enjoy this incredible setting together.
