Well it was an eventful drive up as a car went into a power line pole and knocked it down. We were just a few short miles from Camp Campbell but we might as well have been back in San Jose. No one was going anywhere.
A local church kindly opened its parking lot, and more importantly its bathrooms, so we could stretch our legs and take care of business, so to speak. The kids were terrific. We all used our lifeskills of patience and flexibility and enjoyed lunch outside under the blue sky and sunshine. We couldn't have asked for better behavior under difficult circumstances.
Everyone was ready to hit the ground running when the buses pulled into Camp Campbell. The staff was ready and welcoming. The teachers met to cover important business and the counselors and cabin leaders got the kids settled before their first outing.
Mrs. McLean and I managed to catch up with two separate groups during their hikes. The kids enjoyed sketching some of the local vegetation and making discoveries in the woods. We learned to eat from Nature's Larder: huckleberries, wild sorrel & Douglas Fir leaves. Yummy!
It's just about time for dinner. After that the kids will settle in for either the "Night Hike" and "Evening Activities" depending upon their group assignment.
Thanks SO much for the update!! Glad you finally made it with what sounds like minimal collateral damage ;-)
